2024 - APAC Competition ✦

Monash DeepNeuron is proud to announce that our undergraduate team has won a Merit Award in the prestigious 7th APAC HPC-AI Competition, marking this as the second consecutive year of their achievement.

2024’s competition featured 41 teams from 23 universities and research institutions across nine countries and regions.

The competition this year featured two standout projects: the use of HOOMD-blue simulations for modelling complex particle systems with applications in materials science, and the development of Llama-3, a cutting-edge large language model. Llama-3 leverages an advanced AI cluster for distributed inference, showcasing innovations in computational efficiency and scalability.

The Monash HPC Branch team, led by Kevin Duigan, Michael Xue, David Le, Simon Michnowicz, and Daniel Arnould demonstrated exceptional skills and innovation. Thank you to Application Specialist Simon Michnowic for his guidance, and to Monash eResearch for their continued sponsorship and support.

This recognition highlights the team's commitment to advancing HPC and AI technologies, embodying the spirit of collaboration and innovation and look forward to their future contributions.

Monash DeepNeuron is thrilled to share that our cluster competition team won the Merit Prize at SuperComputing Asia 2024 for our work in the 6th HPC-AI APAC Competition!

Our members Allister and Yusuke had the privilege of presenting our work at SCA2024 and receiving the award for the team.

The Task ✦

The competition involved a collaborative project for developing earth-system simulation components (HPC) for use in climate and weather studies 🌦️, and the development of a multilingual language model that uses an AI cluster to provide distributed inference service.

In our 2023 APAC competition, MPAS-Atmosphere was chosen as the HPC application, and Bloom as the AI application. Our task is to optimise these softwares to achieve as high a benchmark as possible while staying under compute resource constraints.

In this competition, students had access to two of the largest clusters in the Southern Hemisphere, the NCI and Singapore's ASPIRE (read more).
