Recruitment

Recruitment usually begins in O-Week. You will need to submit a formal application through the ‘Join Us’ tab or through our Facebook page.

  1. If successful, you will be invited to an interview. Applications are assessed on a rolling basis, so interviews are held from the beginning of the recruitment to around Week 5.

  2. If offered a position in the team, you will begin formal training from around Week 5 until Week 7. It will consist of workshops that teach you everything, from the basics to creating your project.

  3. Then you are part of the team! In the following project season you will begin working on your project.

✦ The Roles ✦

  • PROJECT TEAM: DEEP LEARNING MEMBER

    • Teach computers (AI) to do what comes naturally to humans

    • Research and understand cutting edge AI and DL publications

    • Implement complex DL algorithms to solve real world issues

    • Consult external stakeholders and organisations about opportunities for AI to improve processes

    • Architect robust DL models from theoretical frameworks and improve upon existing research

    • Publish findings post project completion through scientific articles or theoretical papers

  • PROJECT TEAM: HPC MEMBER

    • Use parallel data processing to improve computing performance and perform complex calculations

    • Explore the use of HPC techniques, tools and platforms to optimise performance of algorithms

    • Implement and test parallel algorithms, analysing their results to explore further optimisations

    • Collaborate with external stakeholders to consider applications of HPC to solve their problems

    • Participate in global cluster competitions to optimise algorithms on provided supercomputers

    • Study research papers in preparation for future HPC research projects

  • BUSINESS: DESIGN COORDINATOR

    • Responsible for all visual content for MDN

    • Create print, web and social content for events + campaigns, and promotional material for our sponsors

    • Design MDN merchandise

    • Perform administrative duties, such as surveying consumers and attending weekly meetings

    • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud is desired, but not mandatory

  • BUSINESS: PUBLICATIONS OFFICER

    • Responsible for online communications and publications from MDN

    • Communicate with all branches to curate content for all our platforms, including social media posts and blog posts

    • Attend weekly meetings and brainstorm marketing campaign ideas and strategies

    • Strong written + communication skills are desired

  • BUSINESS: INDUSTRY REPRESENTATIVE

    • Responsible for organisation of sponsorships

    • Contact members of the industry to seek sponsorship agreements for MDN

    • Run MDN industry events, such as Q&A panels or networking events

  • EDUCATION: LAW & ETHICS COMMITTEE MEMBER

    • Responsible for educating, advocating and demonstrating to people the importance of creating ethical and lawful AI

    • Lead innovative and educational workshops, hackathons and moots

    • Connect with external groups, such as law firms, research centres, student clubs and charities

    • Lead philosophical debates and develop an ethical framework that safeguards our AI project

  • EDUCATION: OUTREACH COORDINATOR

    • Responsible for addressing issues associated with accessibility to technology

    • Increase awareness and interest surrounding AI, making it accessible for all

    • Deliver outreach workshops to schools and other organisations

    • Introduce people to the exciting world of AI and provide them with opportunities to interact with these technologies

  • OPERATIONS: EVENTS MEMBER

    • Responsible for organising MDN’s events

    • Support logistics

  • OPERATIONS: PEOPLE & CULTURE OFFICER

    • Responsible for promoting diversity and inclusion in MDN

    • Organise workshops and activities

    • Support seminars and training

    • Strengthen team culture through social events

  • Step 1: Brush up on your coding skills

    We are happy if you know any coding languages! However, our DL projects are mainly written in Python, whilst our HPC projects are usually written in Linux.

    Step 2: Refine Your Soft Skills

    At MDN, being a friendly teammate is as important as a being coding-savvy one!

    Step 3: Give a Project a Shot!

    ⟡ Try your own project! You don’t have to be an expert and it doesn’t have to be a perfect/completed project.

    ⟡ Search online ‘Beginner Deep Learning Project’ or ‘Easy High-Performance Computing Task’, there are heaps of easy, small and fun projects to do!

    ⟡ Step us through the bugs/problems you have faced in your project

  • ⟡ Tell us about your leadership and communication experiences (experience in contacting companies and planning events is useful!)

    ⟡ Show us you are passionate about industry relations

    ⟡ Present and speak confidently in your interview

    ⟡ Suggest some creative MDN event ideas + potential companies we should collaborate with

  • ⟡ Bring a creative mind and passion to create bespoke designs for a range of campaigns

    ⟡ Gain some experience with utilising Canva and Adobe for generating content such as social media posts

  • ⟡ Experience with a diverse portfolio of social media channels, including LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok is preferrable

    ⟡ Come prepared to share and engage in fun and unique social media campaigns

    ⟡ Strong written and verbal communication skills are highly desirable

  • ⟡ Show you have great presentation and public speaking skills with relevant past experiences

    ⟡ Experience in outreach / community work / leadership is not necessary, just be passionate!

  • ⟡ Show your passion for the intersection of law, ethics & AI

    ⟡ Justify your initiative, communication and time management skills with past experiences

    ⟡ Have a brainstorm about a relevant legal issue of your choice and be able to explain to us why you find it interesting

    ⟡ No restrictions on experience in this field, anyone is welcome to apply!
