ChatGPT in Education

[Above: One of four conditions on the use of generative AI that teachers can impose under Monash University’s new Policy.]

ChatGPT’s launch in November 2022 elicited a wide range of reactions in academic circles. Educational institutions have moved quickly to establish a position on its use in assessments, and Monash University has been no exception. Some commentators see benefits in the chatbot's ability to provide students with incredible access to information. Others, however, believe that its arrival marks the death of university essays. In particular, concerns have been raised about the AI’s potential to undermine academic integrity. The debate surrounding ChatGPT's role in education raises questions about how it aligns with our educational values. Is ChatGPT just another gadget at students’ disposal, or does it undermine our pedagogical model altogether?
